As part of the United Association (UA), the Pipefitters Local 274 Building Trades Pipefitter Apprenticeship encompasses work in, high-rise apartment buildings, data centers, supermarkets, food warehousing and processing facilities, power plants, chemical installations, manufacturing facilities, waste water and water treatment plants, schools and hospitals across Local 274’s Jurisdiction in Bergen, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, an Warren Counties. We work outside in the elements on construction sites doing the manual labor that requires a high level of skill to complete installation and maintenance. We are always seeking applicants with previous piping skills, mechanical skills, welding experience and ability.
The term of the Apprenticeship is 5 Years includes a required 246 hours per year of school training and 8,500 hours of on the job training. After the successful completion of each year of the apprenticeship, the apprentice will see an immediate increase in wages and benefits. The Apprenticeship is rigorous and demands a lot from its participants but will reward those who are successful in the end.
Training takes place at Local 274’s state of the art Training Facility in Parsippany, NJ. Apprentices will attend school one day every other week as well as complete various online assignments throughout the year. Attendance and punctuality is not optional along with adhering to the rules and regulations of the Training Center. It is ensured that all apprentices have an equal opportunity to learn the trade in a fair and safe environment. It is required that all apprentices complete the courses with passing grades in order to progress and remain in the program. The curriculum in includes exciting subject including but not limited to : OSHA 10, Standard of Excellence, Heritage of the UA, Pipefittings Valves Supports and Fasteners, Pipefitting Mathematic and Layout, Oxy-Acetylene Torch Cutting, Soldering and Brazing, Pipe Threading, Blueprint Reading and Drafting, Crane Signaling, Rigging and Knot tying, Theory of Steam Systems, Hydronic Heating and Cooling, Pro-Press Joining Methods, Valve Repair, Medical Gas Certification, Tube Bending, Victaulic Joining Methods, OSHA 30, SMAW(Stick) Welding Plate and Pipe, GTAW(Tig) Welding Plate and Pipe, GMAW(Mig) Plate and Pipe(including Advanced Waveform RMD). Some of these subjects included are for advanced apprentices who achieve and progress faster than others. The Apprenticeship is “what you make of it” in other words for the right applicant “The sky is the limit”.
The other part of that makes up the apprenticeship is the on-the –job Training that occurs while you are employed with one of our contractors. On the job you will work with experienced Journeymen starting out slowly with entry level tasks and progressing to learn the trade related skills you will use for the rest of your career. Earning the respect of the Journeymen you are working with will encourage them to go the extra mile when developing your skills and may even end in a lifelong friendship. Applicants interested in applying should be capable of the following, enduring the physical demands of the construction industry, work overtime, evenings, and weekends if required, 8 hours every day, able to lift at least 40 LBS, and able to climb at least an 8-foot ladder. Apprentices must also be able and willing to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) specifically hard hat, safety gloves, safety glasses, ear protections, work boots, neon colored clothing, but no limited to these items. Apprentices must also be willing to take the initiative to learn the trade while on the job site and completing the curriculum of the Pipefitter Apprenticeship.

Application Process Step-by-Step for Pipefitting/Welding apprenticeship.
1. Appear in person during the advertised application period.
(generally once a year in May)
2. Have copies of the correct documents in hand.
3. Fill out application on premise
4. Receive Aptitude Test Ticket with date and time of test
5. Appear for Aptitude Test with I.D. and correct form of payment
(WorkKeys Related Math and Workplace Documents)
6.
-Earn a Score of 5 or greater on both sections of the Aptitude Test
and receive a letter in the mail for a scheduled interview.
-Receive <5 on either section = Re-apply next year.
7. Selection of Apprentices made based on score of Interview.

8. Begin Apprenticeship Training
